For decades, personal computing has largely revolved around Windows and macOS.

Windows established its dominance through enterprise capabilities, broad application compatibility, customisation, and familiarity. macOS, meanwhile, became known for its polished user experience and tightly integrated ecosystem.

Today, the landscape is changing. ChromeOS, Android, iOS, and platforms such as Samsung DeX have demonstrated that many users can be productive without a traditional desktop operating system. Combined with cloud services and web browser-based applications, organisations are becoming less dependent on a specific operating system.

In this changing environment, Linux may be worth re-exploring.

Modern Linux distributions now combine many of the strengths traditionally associated with Windows and macOS, offering polished and user-friendly desktop experiences alongside extensive flexibility and control.

For organisations with primarily browser-based workflows, Linux can reduce software licensing costs, extend hardware lifecycles, and lessen reliance on a single vendor ecosystem.

This is no longer just a consideration for home users. Public sector organisations, including those in France, are exploring Linux and open-source software as part of broader digital sovereignty initiatives.

Linux will not be the right fit for every organisation. Platform-dependent applications, user familiarity, and increased management complexity can present challenges, particularly in larger enterprise environments.

However, for smaller organisations, businesses, and targeted user groups, Linux can be a compelling alternative.

As computing continues to shift towards cloud and browser-based services, it may be time to re-evaluate whether Windows or macOS are the only options.
