If you or your organisation are juggling computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices, it may be time to rethink your device strategy.

While multiple devices can provide redundancy and specialised capabilities, they can also introduce additional cost, complexity, management overhead, and security risks.

Fortunately, modern technology is making device consolidation increasingly practical:

  • 2-in-1 laptops and detachables – combine laptop and tablet functionality into a single device.

  • Foldable phones – bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets.

  • Desktop modes – allow mobile devices to deliver a desktop-like experience (e.g. Samsung DeX) when connected to an external display.

  • Web applications – are increasingly enabling browsers to become a universal platform, providing access to applications and services across multiple devices.

  • Cloud PCs – provide access to a full remote desktop experience whenever additional computing power or application compatibility is needed.

A consolidated approach is not always the right answer, but reducing unnecessary complexity where possible can simplify management, strengthen security, and optimise costs.

As technology continues to evolve, innovations such as trifold devices are showing us a future where a single device can meet almost every computing need.

Until then, taking a strategic approach to device selection and consolidation can help individuals and organisations reduce costs and complexity while maintaining productivity, versatility, and resilience.
